UPDATED SEPT. 20, 2022

1 P.M.

Hello District 202 Families, Staff, and Community, This is Tom Hernandez with today's update on the busing situation.

We learned early today that there is a tentative agreement with the First Student bus drivers.

***Although there has been progress, nothing has been finalized yet. There will be a vote on the contract tomorrow, Wednesday September 21st.

We are cautiously optimistic about the situation and we will give you an update at 6 AM tomorrow morning as we did today.

We encourage you again to be prepared to make alternate transportation plans for Wednesday, such as driving or walking kids to school, car pooling, working with trusted friends and family, etc.

Again, this is a matter between our contractor and its drivers.

District 202 is not directly involved other than to make clear how much this situation inconveniences our community. But we do apologize for that inconvenience nonetheless.

Have a good evening. You will hear from me again no later than 6 a.m. tomorrow.

(UPDATED SEPT. 19, 2022)

5:15 P.M.

District 202 Families, Staff, and Community,

Yesterday afternoon we promised to update you ASAP with any new information about the possibility of a bus driver strike that could affect Regular Education transportation starting toDAY, September 20, 2022.

HERE IS WHAT WE KNOW RIGHT NOW:

District 202 plans to continue in person school during the potential bus driver strike.

In the event that students are without regular education transportation, we encourage families to drive or walk with their child or carpool with other families in order to get as many students to school as possible.

We will notify you by 6 a.m. whether we will have regular bus service or not

Please click here to read an FAQ for more information.

First Student, our transportation contractor, continues to meet with its drivers today.

***HOWEVER, WE ARE ALSO PLANNING FOR SEVERAL CONTINGENCIES IN WHICH BUSES DO NOT RUN.

***WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO THE SAME. FOR EXAMPLE, DRIVING YOUR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL; CAR POOLING; TRUSTED RELATIVES OR FRIENDS DRIVING KIDS TO SCHOOL, ETC.

Please continue to watch your email later this afternoon/early evening for more detailed information about what that will look like.

Buses WILL BE AVAILABLE TODAY for afterschool athletics and activities.

Again, as always, thank you for your patience and support.

District 202 Families,

You may be aware of issues with transportation that are affecting school districts nationwide -- that includes District 202. Drivers are threatening to strike or stage a work stoppage of some kind that could affect regular education transportation onTuesday.

As of right now we have been working with our local vendor, First Student, to monitor the situation and plan accordingly for REGULAR EDUCATION transportation for Tuesday.

***AT THIS TIME A STRIKE WOULD AFFECT ONLY REGULAR EDUCATION BUS RIDERS. SPECIAL EDUCATION RIDERS WOULD NOT BE IMPACTED.

Remember, tomorrow is a school improvement day so there is no school for students. And so far, this issue seems limited to regular education.

We will continue to monitor this very fluid situation and keep families posted.

However, we encourage you to try to make alternate regular education plans for Tuesday as soon as possible.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause as students return to class after the holiday weekend.
