Second annual Suicide Prevention Walk set for September 12th

The second annual Plainfield Suicide Prevention Walk will be held from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, September 12, 2021, at Plainfield High School-Central Campus at 24120 W. Fort Beggs Drive.

Participation is free and open to the community. Registration is not required.

Attendees will walk the track for an hour in honor or in memory of someone touched by suicide.

PHSCC senior Lydia Magemeneas is organizing this year’s walk.

Magemeneas is a National Honor Society officer in charge of the society’s Suicide Prevention Campaign.

2019 PHSCC graduate Kaden Dolbee created the walk in September 2019.

The event aims to raise awareness of suicide, honor those who have died by suicide, and show support for those who maybe considering suicide and need support.

The walk will feature booths with mental health resource information, speakers including a representative from Elyssa’s Mission, an organization that administers suicide prevention programs in schools.

This year’s walk will highlight resources available to help prevent suicide, Magemeneas said.

This is the first event Magemeneas has organized and she’s grateful for all the support so far, she said.

“It means a lot to me that we are providing resources to everyone,” Magemeneas said.

“A lot of us don’t want to reach out for resources and it means a lot that everyone is willing to support this event.”

Organizers will follow District 202’s COVID-19 safety guidelines and mandates for the walk.
